Cephalotus follicularis, commonly known as the Albany pitcher plant, is a small, herbaceous carnivorous plant native to the southwestern coast of Western Australia, particularly near Albany. It is the sole species in its genus and family, making it evolutionarily distinct from other carnivorous plants.
Cephalotus produces two types of leaves: flat, non-carnivorous ones for photosynthesis, and specialized pitcher-shaped leaves that serve as pitfall traps. These pitchers, typically 3–6 cm tall, feature a ribbed peristome that secretes nectar to lure insects, a lid with translucent windows to confuse prey, and slippery inner walls with downward-pointing hairs that prevent escape.
Cephalotus thrives in temperate, boggy environments with acidic, well-drained peat soils and high humidity. Grows well in 75% sphagnum peat, 25% propagating sand or perlite.
